Paul Sullivan - River Music Notes - Fall 2009

Music Lessons
Another big development for me this year has been the start of doing some private teaching. Every day, in my studio looking out over a beautiful little tidal river, I have the pleasure of spending a few hours with a wide variety of people ranging in age from 9 to 90, who come to work on their musical goals with me. Some are professional musicians who want to hone particular skills, while others are kids, bursting with energy and ideas. They come in every week with new songs they’ve written which we work on and record. There are high school jazz pianists who want me to coach them on their band pieces and competition preparations, and there are ladies who just want to play some of their favorite old Gershwin tunes with a little more flair. Many of my students want to learn how to improvise. It’s a never-failing source of interest and delight, and I look forward to it every day. I have never had a regular teaching schedule in my life, and I am so glad to now have more time for it. I invite any of you to get in touch with me if you would like to work with me. Experience and talent are not important factors. Enthusiasm and commitment are the only prerequisites!

Internet Lessons
As you may know, many people are now taking private music lessons online through live video connections. Although I haven’t tried it yet, I know other teachers who do it regularly and it seems like a very cool way to go. If you have any interest in it, I would be glad to investigate it further with you. Let’s get into the 21st century together!

facebookAnd speaking of moving into the 21st century, I have now started a Facebook Fan Page. Please join me there. It’s a simple way to stay in touch and for me to let you know about musical topics and events that might interest you. For example, my Facebook fans were the first to find out about the winner of our big Lobster Contest last spring, in which we sent 10 Maine lobsters, caught right here in my town, to a lucky winner. We made an exciting video of the actual drawing, starring the lobstermen themselves, complete with some Maine accents. You can see the video HERE. We’ll be doing another contest like that this Spring, and you surely don’t want to miss out on your chance to win BIG—so please take a moment to become a member of my Facebook Fan page. Just click on the blue F above.
